A b o u t

I've never been very good at that.
The steeling myself part.
I find it better sometimes to just be a little weak.
I'm all right with that, really.

BASICFULL NAME: Alistair Theirin

SCARS: A long deep scar across and over his left shoulder, small scar on his stomach and corresponding one on the small of his back where he was once run through and a few less severe ones from cuts and stab wounds. All healed with either magic or time.
TATTOOS AND PIERCINGS: Grey Warden insignia on his shoulder. Turns out Zevran is pretty talented and convincing.
NOTABLE FEATURES: impressive build, infectious laugh, open friendly face, sharp features, ( baring a striking resemblance to Cailan )
FACE CLAIM: None. I doubt I will find one I like.
PERSONALITY:NOTABLE QUIRKS / TRAITS: A tendency to fidget with a runic worry token when pensive or troubled ( though he does this less and less as time goes on ). A further tendency to ramble an lapse into [Buffy Speak] (https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/BuffySpeak). He wears a mask of brevity but is introspective, observant and calculating. He would be the last to admit it, but he is a natural leader but has the tendency to step back, severely doubting his ability to take charge.

HISTORY: TBASOME NOTES ON MY PORTRAYAL:Any of those decisions that directly affect Alistair ( such as what happens with Goldanna, whether he received his mother’s amulet or if he agrees to the Dark Ritual or not and what happens to him in preparation for and during the Landsmeet ) depend a great deal on the Warden I am writing with and I have no default state. I also follow most of the main canon effects on his approval and disapproval and reaction to any of the decisions made by the warden.Areas where some canon divergence may occur:
Probably my entire attitude and approach towards the whole hardening thing. I imagine his character development would be nuanced and over a period of time rather than triggered from one or two stray comments. I would approach it more as him maturing, gradually gaining confidence and becoming more decisive and assertive ( without constantly undermining himself or deferring to others ) rather than simply becoming more arrogant, selfish and demanding. He can be assertive and confident without losing his gentleness and kindness. While his personal growth is greatly influenced by his relationship with the Warden, he has far more agency and is capable of maturing on his own through experience and his own innate skills as a leader.
The Landsmeet: Even if Loghain is conscripted, as furious as he may be, Alistair will not so easily abandon the Wardens. He will storm out of the Landsmeet but will eventually return before they leave for Redcliffe, angry and bitter but resolute in his decision to stay. His loyalty to the Grey Wardens and duty to stop the Blight takes priority over his hatred for Loghain. Besides, he would be dishonoring Duncan and the memory of all his Grey Warden companions who died if he gave up now. If Loghain is spared, his relationship with the Warden will be all but destroyed. He will no longer trust or respect them and refuse to engage with them unless he has to. How irreparable this damage is, depends on their initial relationship and how the fallout of the Landsmeet is dealt with. He is pretty unyielding when it comes to his feelings towards Logain but also man enough to know when to set them aside in the face of a greater threat.Exile: He is not simply a drunk crying in his ale about not being king. Honestly, for the most part, he couldn't care less. Since the beginning Eamon made it clear he was a nobody and would never be a Theirin. At best he would be a Templar only because he didn't want him around Redcliffe any longer than needed. Then suddenly he is told he has to be king whether he likes it or not and only because there is no other alternative? No. The only time he makes a stand to become king on his own is if Loghain is recruited otherwise he is more than happy to let Anora keep her crown. She either has him dragged away to be executed ( in which he escapes and finds himself a wanted fugitive ) or she exiles him from Ferelden. He will then become a wondering mercenary / sellsword / blade for hire / bounty hunter / monster slayer living from tavern to tavern killing for coin. After years of this he tires of his aimless existence and decides to rejoin the Wardens in Orlais some time shortly before the Conclave and the Ferelden Wardens start vanishing to Orlais.

CANON

01: Templar Recruit ( Dragon 9:20 – 9:30 )
Sent off to a monastery in Bournshire at the age of 10, he begins his Chantry training as a lay-brother and then as a Templar initiate. This verse is set during his time as a young Templar-in-training until Duncan arrives and recruits him into the Grey Wardens.
02: Oh Grey Warden ( Dragon 9:30 - 9:31 )
Set during the events of the Fifth Blight. Makes for riveting tales, I’m sure.
03: Reclaiming the Throne ( Dragon 9:31 – 9:41 )
Set after the Blight – Alistair is made king.
Reluctant at first, Alistair earns himself the reputation of being the ‘King of the People’ along with his unorthodox methods of handling nobility. While he does have dealings with other nations and powers, his focus initially is on rebuilding Ferelden. He spends much of his time travelling around and overseeing Ferelden’s restoration after the Blight. He studies politics and proves to be a good king, relying less heavily on Teagan for guidance as time goes on.
a) Rules alone. Rumors are rife among the nobility that the Theirin line ended with Cailan and he is an usurper who unjustly overthrew Anora, so his rule is not without opposition.b) Marries Anora. ( conditional ) there is far more stability ( again, among the nobility ) and, while not Cailen, he impresses her by being a capable king.04: Honoring an Oath ( Dragon 9:31 – 9:41 ) ( Default )
Set after the Fifth Blight – Alistair remains a Warden and helps rebuild the Grey Wardens in Ferelden during the Thaw after the Blight where he is placed in charge of the parties involved in hunting down Darkspawn stragglers and various other missions that take him all across Ferelden, Orlais and into the Free Marches.
05: Inquisition ( Dragon 9:41 - 9:44 )a: King Alistair Theirin
Either alone or jointly with Anora, Alistair continues to bare the weight of the crown as he deals with political turmoil, dancing and poison, the Mage-Templar War, Venatori and ancient Darkspawn. Teagan goes grey in the process.
b: Warden Alistair ( Default )
Red Lyrium, Coryphius’ false Calling and Blood magic shenanigans among the Wardens. — All the Warden's in ferelden suddenly disappear having beein summoned to join the Orlaisian Wardens under Warden-Commander Clarell who starts delving into blood magic in an attempt toend all future Blights. Alistair, having none of this, protests and starts to investigate. He gets branded a traitor and goes into hiding where he teams up with Hawke who is conducting an investigation of their own. Together they make contact with the Inquisition. After the battle at Adamant, he takes command of the surviving Grey Warden and heads off to Weisshaupt to inform them of what had transpired. Excitement fades quickly to disappointment when he finally meets the First Warden and everything is a mere shell of what he had been lead to believe. Further disillusionment.

AU

06: exiled princeIn the event that Anora perceives him as a threat, Alistair will either be exiled or imprisoned awaiting his execution ( the delay, giving him a chance to escape ). Either way, he will be deemed an outlaw in Ferelden and will flee to the Free Marches to decide what to do next, helping some refugees escape the Blight along the way.He becomes a freelance mercenary ( and a deserter among the Warden ) fighting against those who would prey on the weak and frightened. Bitter and disillusioned he finds it harder to care about much anymore, living from tavern to tavern, town to town always on the move with only the gear he needs and the coin he earns. While he has all but lost faith in any goodness in the world, he does not lose his moral compass. When the Mage Rebellion breaks out, he initially wants to stay out of it but ends up helping the lost and desperate and displaced mages, pitting himself against the Templars.Teagan works endlessly to try and get him back to Ferelden as he is the last of the Thierin bloodline and he still feels that Alistair is the rightful heir to the throne. Alistair respectfully ( and rather stubbornly ) disagrees. He will eventually return to the order but in Orlais under Warden-Commander Clarell.07: mage hunter ( templar )Duncan chooses not to conscript Alistair, feeling it safer that he
stays with the Templars and actually considers it a BAD IDEA to taint the Theirin bloodline even though he is just the spare heir no one wants. ( I mean... )
a) After taking his vows, Alistair gets sent off to Kinloch Hold ( begrudgingly ). Each Harrowing is a nightmare, each mage they hunt down drives him deeper into despair and he resents the Order and fears becoming jaded and callous. At the onset of the Blight, he accompanies the group of mages sent to fight at Ostagar and is instrumental in bringinga small handful of surviving mages safety back to the Circle. During Uldred’s rebellion, he is one of the few Templar trapped up in the Tower after it is locked down. The Warden finds him barricaded in one of the studies protecting a group of frightened young apprentices, very badly injured but still fighting. After the situation is resolved, he either joins the Warden in their fight against the Blight ( eager to leave the Circle ) if they conscript the Templars or stays and helps to rebuild the Circle if the mages are spared and conscripted instead.
b) He is transferred to Denerim and often goes into the Alienage with Mother Boann. He can be found outside the Chantry arguing with one of the Revered Mothers. He is tasked with investigating the Mage Collective.
Either way, rumor of his royal bloodline circulates after Cailan’s death ( much to his dismay ) and Arl Aemon seeks him out to reclaim the throne.08: Darkspawn Chronicles ( WIP )No one survived the Joining at Ostagar and Alistair is left to unite Ferelden against Blight ( and Loghain ) on his own. ( Or basically: "In my defense I was left unsupervised!" )
